The Family Forest Carbon Program Webinar: Climate-Smart Forestry Guidance and Incentives for Small Family Forests

Online

What is the Family Forest Carbon Program?

Developed by the American Forest Foundation and The Nature Conservancy the Family Forest Carbon Program enables family forest owners in Vermont and the Northeast to access climate finance from carbon markets with the goal of increasing the adoption of climate smart forestry practices to grow more resilient forests, conserve biodiversity, add value to timber stands, and mitigate climate impacts.

This program provides landowners who are interested in managing their forests -- when carbon is one of their top values -- technical assistance and annual payments if they commit to either delaying harvest, or doing climate-smart forest harvests, for 20 years.

Early Winter Bird Monitoring

Find out who's sticking around for winter and see how they're getting along. This is a special week-day-morning bird monitoring with the Green Mountain Audubon Center Director, Kim Guertin.

Following our regular monitor route, we will search for birds in various habitats at the Audubon Center.  This is a great opportunity to build your experience using binoculars and listening to bird song. We will identify the birds we see or hear, and record counts of their population numbers. Binoculars and bird guides are available to borrow. Beginners are welcome!

The long-term data we gather contributes to the eBird database, which is available to a global community of educators, land managers, ornithologists, conservation biologists, and the public. Explore bird sightings from Audubon Vermont's Green Mountain Audubon Center.

We typically finish our monitoring route by about 10 am, but you can leave earlier if necessary.

Fall Forest Bathing 2022

Facilitated by certified Nature & Forest Therapy Guide Duncan Murdoch

Huntington, Vermont

Come experience nature in new and deeply familiar ways with the practice of forest bathing.  A different act than other nature connection experiences such as hiking, birding, or tree identifying, in forest bathing you are invited to slow down with intentionality and mindfulness to engage your traditional five senses and beyond. Give your body and mind a chance to rest and restore while taking in the subtleties and wonder of nature.

We will walk through the incredibly dynamic, diverse and loved land of the Green Mountain Audubon Center, being sure to visit the hemlock swamp, beaver pond, and babbling brook. The walk will be less than a mile and will conclude with a tea ceremony.

What is forest bathing?

Forest Bathing is a research-based practice for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. The decades old practice originated in Japan and is known as shinrin-yoku, which literally translates to “taking in the forest" or “forest bathing”. Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. Your Nature & Forest Therapy Guide builds on those benefits and looks beyond to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature and are intrinsically connected to all other beings in fundamental ways.

Duxbury, Vermont

This group celebrates coming together and a love of birds. We intend to create and hold an inclusive space for cis & trans women and femme non-binary community members.  Whether you're a first time or an experienced birder, our purpose is to create a safe place to come together and share in our mutual love for nature and birds. This event is co-hosted by Audubon Vermont, the Pride Center of Vermont, Glow VT, Women Owning Woodlands Vermont, and Vermont Land Trust!

There will be binoculars and bird guides to borrow and we will send and email about the conditions before hand. Please plan to dress appropriately for the weather. Layers are helpful!

Tickets and Cost: There is limited parking: only 10 cars are able to be parked at this location, so we are asking for you to please carpool! There are only 10 tickets available due to limited parking. If you have a car load of 4 people and all 4 are able to pay, please add an additional contribution to make the total ticket $40. We are asking those who are able to please purchase a "Full Cost Car Load" ticket ($10 per person). Please consider choosing the "No Cost Ticket" if you are a member of the BIPOC community, a young person in school, unemployed or underemployed, an AmeriCorps Member, or purchasing a ticket feels like a burden on your resources.

This helps cover the costs of those who are not able to pay, so all in our community have the opportunity to participate. This also supports Audubon Vermont and the work we do to protect birds and the places they need now and in the future!

All ages welcome! Youth under 18 years should be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring snacks and plenty of water! Service dogs welcome, but please leave your pets at home - they scare away the birds.

Why is Audubon hosting this program just for women, agender/multi-gender/non-binary and women-aligned people? Audubon Vermont is committed to providing opportunities for access to the outdoors for all in a safe and inclusive environment. We know that when we create intentional opportunities for specific groups to participate in outdoor activities, they show up. This means that we can support our entire community of conservationists and outdoor recreation enthusiasts and help more people find their place in the great outdoors. To preserve the birds, wildlife, and habitats they need to survive, we need all hands-on deck.

An Inside Look: Bird-Friendly Maple

Roughly 3.4 million gallons of maple syrup are produced in the US each year, 74% of which comes solely from the sugarbushes of Vermont, New York, and Maine. These sugarbushes (forests utilized for syrup production) aren’t just vital for our breakfast table – they provide essential nesting habitat for some of our most threatened songbirds.

Through the Bird-Friendly Maple Project, Audubon promotes sugarbush management practices that support birds, forest health, and sustainable maple sap production and certifies maple producers for improving habitat quality. More informationSteve Hagenbuch is a Senior Conservation Biologist and forester with Audubon Vermont's Healthy Forests Initiative. In this position, he works with private landowners, municipalities, and other conservation partners to promote management activities that will enhance the health of forestland for priority bird species.

This presentation will cover:

  • What birds can be found nesting in maple sugarbushes.

  • What attributes make a maple sugarbush “bird-friendly”.

  • How to recognize bird friendly maple and where to find it.

A monitoring and meet-up event
Location Details:
Switchback Brewing Company

Burlington, 05401

Meet up with Audubon Vermont at Switchback Brewery to help us figure out what's up with our Chimney Swifts. This is the third year of our Chimney Swift Recovery Project and we need your help to locate their nesting locations, their late-summer roosts, and determine the timing of their migration.

Meet us at Switchback Brewery at 6:30 pm to learn about Chimney Swifts and the recovery project. Chimney Swift populations are steeply declining, with a 53% percent drop between 1966 and 2007 in the United States and a 26% decline in Vermont over 25 years. To better understand what Vermont habitats are important to Chimney Swifts, we are working with Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department to monitor Vermont's population.
